Our position is...

29 degrees 35 minutes North, 13 degrees 27 minutes West. We are going 6.4 Knts. and are on a course of 236 degrees true. This is our fourth day on our way to the Canaries. We should arrive in Grand Canaria tomorrow afternoon. The wind is eight Knts. apparent and the seas are medium to calm. It has been overcast all day and it is 74.8 degrees down below. We are motor sailing and the visibility is poor. Our engine is consuming far more fuel than is normal, three gallons an hour instead of one-and-a-half, but even at this rate of consumtion we still have just enough to make it to Grand Canaria. We should need every drop we can get as the wind is so calm. This morning my dad found a foot of water in the bilge and saltwater spewing out of our engine's oil cooler so, laying on a scalding hot engine and being thrown around by the seas, my dad had to replace the thing. Luckily I slept through all this.:) Today I put out a yellow feather, an Ilander Sailure, with the yellow feather farthest out, and a string of "birds" as teasers. This afternoon I got a GIGANTIC hit on the Ilander sailure. The line was screaming out at a crazy speed even though I had the drag cranked down as far as I could without going over the stern pulpit. So much line went out that I could see the spool before I got the fish somewhat under control. It had hardly been a minute but my arms already felt like spaghetti and my knees were shaky so I handed the rod off to my dad for a turn. It felt like we were not hauling the fish to us but rather hauling Immanuel to the fish. After a couple more minutes of getting nowhere the line finally broke clean off.:( This month is supposed to be a high season here for blue marlin and bluefin tuna so, as the fish went deep, I suspect it was a bluefin tuna.
